Painting a chair...

In preparation for my mom's arrival tomorrow (to help me finish up a couple of projects), I did a decent amount of painting today.  I think I'm ready to hang up the ole' paint brush and spray paint can for a while.  I think the fumes are getting to my sidekick...

Yes, he napped on the stairs as I worked. :)

One of the painting projects I worked on today involved my Craigslist chair.  My mom is planning to help me recover it tomorrow, so the wood needed to be painted and ready.  This is what I started with...
Lovely without fabric, isn't she?  Should I leave it like this?  I just can't decide...NOT!!!

I decided to practice with the paint treatment on this little piece.  It attaches to the front of the chair (just below the cushion), and I knew if I messed it up it wouldn't be the end of the world.  I started with a solid coat of the red spray paint I used on my desk chair.  Easy enough, right?

Next, I pulled out the ole' Stain and Seal that I used on the kitchen cabinets.  The color is VanDyke brown--a very blacky-brown.  I brushed this on over the red with a small paint brush...

Then, I took an old rag and wiped as much of this off as I could...

This process left me with this look on the wood.  I decided it was a bit too dullsville for me, so I intended to brush on less of the Stain and Seal for the rest of the chair.

I ended up with something like this...

and this...

and a little bit of this...

Can you see how fabulously imperfect this paint job is?  I love it!  Believe me, I am a perfectionist by nature.  I can go on and on about all of the things wrong with the way that I did this, but it still works!  That is the beauty of painting something...it doesn't have to be perfect.  The imperfections will forever remind me that this was MY little Craigslist find that I made look the way that I wanted it to.  I cannot wait to see what the fabric will do on this piece!

After finishing the trim work on the hallway painting, I decided to finally hang my black and white pictures.  I was pretty pleased with my cheap little project...

Finally on the wall...

First picture--Love!  I already showed you this one...

Next Picture--I took this when Andy and I traveled to New Orleans a year or so ago.  We both loved the cemeteries down there--so neat!

Last Picture:  What do you do when you have no children?  You take a picture of the closest thing and hang that on the wall. :)  He might as well be our kid, right?  Although, I pray that when we do have kids one day that they are slightly less furry. :)

More chair updates to come!  Have a great night!
